Idle sprayers increase herbicide residue risk

When mixing multiple products in the sprayer tank, mixing order becomes very important.

Sprayer sitting uncleaned for a couple days in the pre-seed window could result in tank and plumbing residues that could come back to haunt the applicator when in-crop spraying starts.

Whenever the power plant goes off, thoroughly clean the sprayer.

Weather delays and the risk from idle sprayers
The longer a herbicide sits in a sprayer, the greater the risk that it is going to hang up in the tank. Sprayers should be cleaned at the end of every work day regardless if the same product or tank mix is being sprayed the following day. Unexpected damage to canola can occur when sprayers…
Flush out herbicide residue in sprayer tank
When transitioning from burnoff to in-crop spraying of herbicides or switching from one crop to another, sprayer operators are reminded to clean out sprayers properly. Residues of herbicides, particularly Group 2 herbicides, that are left in the tank may settle, dry or precipitate on tank walls and plumbing and may be more difficult to remove…
Finding time for sprayer tank clean-out
With wind delays and pressure to get crops seeded, the weed spraying operation can bounce from crop to crop, and from pre-seed burnoff in one field to early post-emergence in another. This requires extra attention to detail for tank mixing and sprayer clean-out. It is always good practice to clean the sprayer, especially between pre-seed…
Improperly cleaned sprayer tank means crop damage
We’ve had reports this week of growers causing unexpected damage to canola because the sprayer was not cleaned properly. A complete system cleanout is important and using more than just clean water can help. Check product labels to see which cleaner is recommended. For some, ammonia alone is enough. For some, a detergent (surfactant) alone…
