First hybrid canola variety registered & first HEAR variety released

Hyola 40, the first hybrid canola variety, is registered for commercial production in Canada. It is quickly followed by the very popular hybrid Hyola 401 in 1991.

The same year, Dr. Peter McVetty releases HERO, the first canola cultivar with high erucic acid (HEAR) and low glucosinolates – an ideal composition for use as biodegradable lubricants and slip agents in industrial and household products. Dr. Robert Duncan will later take over the HEAR breeding program at University of Manitoba.

February 21

First high-stability canola registered

Stellar, developed at the University of Manitoba, is the first canola variety bred for a “specialty” fatty acid profile that improves shelf stability. The oil from this canola has a low linolenic fatty acid content, which helps to prevent the oil from going rancid. In subsequent years, plant breeders will develop many more canola varieties with modified oil profiles, such as high oleic and low linolenic/high oleic.

February 21

Growing recognition as a healthier culinary oil

GRAS opens door to U.S. market / CCC launches Grow with Canola

The U.S. provides Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status to canola oil, opening the door to one of the world’s biggest markets.

This huge step forward had been made possible by pioneering researchers Dr. Vivian Bruce and Dr. Bruce McDonald, who were the first to conduct eating trials with human subjects. They found that canola oil was as effective or more effective as other vegetable oils in lowering blood cholesterol.

The tireless commitment to canola by McDonald, Bruce and many other scientists contributed to canola’s acceptance around the world. Today canola oil is the #2 cooking oil in the U.S.

1985 also marked the Canola Council of Canada launches Grow with Canola — a five-year, multi-dimensional technology transfer program aimed at boosting average yields by 25 per cent by 1989. A core component of the program is the brand new Canola Growers Manual, researched and written by Phil Thomas, Alberta Agriculture’s oilseed specialist. The manual is a 175-page, 3-ring binder, “enabling updated information to be added on an ongoing basis.”

Thomas’ studies showed that farmers who were consistently achieving relatively high yields of 35-40 bushels per acre practiced an array of inter-related husbandry techniques in common with a fine sense of the personality of canola.

The manual evolved into a key canola resource still used today: www.canolaencyclopedia.ca.

February 21

First herbicide tolerant canola registered

The new variety OAC Triton is tolerant to triazine, which makes to possible for growers to plant canola on fields infested with wild mustard and stinkweed. Dr. Keith Downey will later breed a second triazine-tolerant variety, Tribute, which will replace OAC Triton because of its earlier maturity and lower seed chlorophyll content.

How did wild bird rape in a farmer’s corn field in Quebec lead to the development of the first herbicide-tolerant canola variety? Watch the following video to find out.

Dr. Keith Downey provides some history on Triton and Tribute, their benefits and limitations.

First major booklet on oil quality published

As part of the industry’s global marketing strategy, Professors Marion Vaisey-Genser and Dr. Michael Eskin of the University of Manitoba collaborate on the first booklet on canola oil for dietitians and health professionals. It covers all aspects of canola oil that make it healthy, appealing and stable.

February 21

CANOLA officially named

Canada’s new double-low varieties are truly a breed apart from rapeseed grown elsewhere in the world. To emphasize these superiorities, the industry adopts a new name for its product: “Canola.” “Can” for Canadian and “Ola” for oil. The term soon begins to appear in the food, feed and seed regulations in Canada and the U.S.

The official definition had been created with the help of Dr. James Daun of the Canadian Grain Commission, who had developed much better methods of measuring chlorophyll and glucosinolates. Later, he would also help expand the CGC harvest survey, which would aid the study of how growing environment impacts quality.

February 21

Double-low trials begin

By now, both Dr. Keith Downey and Dr. Baldur Stefansson have developed B. napus lines with low levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates. Cooperative trials for the first “double-low” rapeseed are underway.

February 21

Low glucosinolate seed identified

A breakthrough comes when rapeseed samples from Poland are brought to the Saskatoon research branch by visiting scientist Dr. Jan Krzymanski. Among the samples is a B. napus variety testing very low for both glucosinolates and erucic acid. Dr. Keith Downey shares the samples with Dr. Baldur Stefansson.

February 21

New testing method accelerates research

At the National Research Council, Dr. Clare Youngs and Dr. Les Wetter devise a fast, accurate method to screen germplasm for glucosinolate levels using rapid gas-liquid chromatography. The new method removes a major barrier to identifying and breeding a low-glucosinolate seed.

February 21

Low-erucic rapeseed reigns

By now, most of the Canadian rapeseed crop is grown from low-erucic seed. The Canadian industry agrees to voluntarily limit erucic acid content to 5% in food products.

First identification of low-erucic trait and transfer to B. napus

Baldur Stefansson and Keith Downey have been searching the world’s rapeseed germplasm for a low-erucic seed.

Now Stefansson finds it: a forage rapeseed from Germany that contains only about 10% erucic acid. He shares the seed with Keith Downey, who is the first to successfully transfer the characteristic to a B. napus variety. This line will become the low-erucic variety ORO released in 1968.

Dr. Downey then sets out to develop a B. rapa variety with the same low-erucic characteristic. He finds one Polish seed with zero erucic acid. From it, he grows one sickly specimen that yields five invaluable seeds. They become the foundation for the B. rapa breeding program, which produces the low-erucic variety Span released in 1971.

February 21

New discoveries modernize plant breeding

At about this time, scientists develop two innovations that greatly accelerate progress toward the goal of low-erucic-acid rapeseed. These two discoveries are a more efficient gas-liquid chromatography process for precise analysis of oil from a single seed, and the “half-seed” technique for more reliable reproduction of promising genotypes.

Innovations Accelerate Research

Canola might not have been discovered without the aid of two plant breeding innovations developed by Canadian scientists in the late 1950s.

The first of these developments was a quick and accurate method to analyze the fatty acid content of oil using gas-liquid chromatography or GLC. The National Research Council purchased a GLC unit in 1957, and Dr. Burton Craig and Martin Mallard were soon busy tinkering with it to fit their needs. Their refinements made it possible to analyze the oil in a single seed.

At the University of Manitoba, Dr. Frithjof Hougen would build on these revolutionary methods for fatty acid profiling using first GLC and then nuclear magnetic resonance. Later, he would develop spectrophotometer assays to rapidly test for seed chlorophyll.

These great advances in oil composition analysis made it possible to take advantage of the second big innovation – the “half-seed technique” discovered by Keith Downey and his graduate student Bryan Harvey. They had determined that seeds from the same mother plant don’t necessarily have the same erucic acid content. Therefore, when looking for the best candidates for breeding, it would make sense to cut each canola seed in two – using one half to analyze the seed for oil composition, and then planting the other half if the oil analysis looked promising.

But in the 1950s, splitting a tiny canola seed was easier said than done. Harvey used an eye surgeon’s scalpel to carry out the delicate dissections, making sure to preserve the root and growing tip.

Amazingly, it worked. The plants grown from these seeds were scraggly, but they were productive.

Armed with the half-seed technique and GLC technology, researchers were able to greatly accelerate the development of low-erucic rapeseed varieties. These techniques were quickly adopted for a wide range of species around the globe.

February 21

Downey and Stefansson move into oilseed research

After its head moves on to a new post, the rapeseed breeding program is taken over by Richard Keith Downey, a young alfalfa breeder at the research station.

A year later, Baldur Stefansson joins the University of Manitoba’s plant science department. His first assignment is to identify an oilseed crop that could work for Prairie farmers. He concludes that rapeseed is the best bet.

The two scientists are focused on the same goal: to revolutionize rapeseed by breeding out its two undesirable qualities, erucic acid and glucosinolates. For the next two decades they work intensively with researchers in two different provinces, sometimes collaborating and sometimes competing as they race to develop a new type of oilseed that will become Canada’s greatest agricultural success story.

Dr. Keith Downey and Dr. Baldur Stefansson

February 21

First new rapeseed variety introduced in Canada

Golden, a B. napus selection with improved oil content and lodging resistance is released by the Saskatoon research centre. Plant breeders in Saskatchewan and Manitoba continue to improve yield and resilience over the next 15 years, making rapeseed a reliable crop for the Prairies.

February 21

Production peaks then plummets

Acres sown to rapeseed grow to 80,000 acres in 1948, and then drop to just 400 acres after price supports end in 1949. With WWII over and diesel power on the rise, the demand for industrial lubricants like rapeseed oil takes a sharp downturn. Rapeseed will be all but forgotten until almost a decade later, when visionary researchers will once again see promise in this prolific plant.

February 21

B. rapa is registered

B. rapa is registered for Canadian production as Polish rapeseed based on production and distribution by the Solovoniuk family, the Polish immigrants who were the first to grow rapeseed in Canada.

February 21

First Prairie crushing facility opens

Rapeseed’s success leads to construction of the Prairie Vegetable Oils crushing facility at Moose Jaw. The president and general manager is J. Gordon Ross, who had been one of the first Canadian farmers selected to grow rapeseed in 1943 as a way of helping the war effort.

A Pioneer from Moose Jaw – J. Gordon Ross

February 21

Field production begins

To help the war effort, a small group of farmers is selected to grow B. napus for industrial oil at a guaranteed price of 6 cents a pound. The seed originates in Argentina – hence the B. napus species becomes known as Argentine rapeseed.

Over the next few years, it becomes clear that both the Argentine and Polish species of rapeseed can thrive under Western Canadian conditions.

February 21

Interest grows after WWII creates urgent demand for oil

The war cuts off Canada’s supply of rapeseed oil from Europe and Asia at a time when industrial lubricants are urgently needed.

T.M. Stevenson, head of the Canada Department of Agriculture’s Forage Division, is confident Western Canada can grow the crop. He takes action to increase the local seed supply.

Meanwhile, a small group of breeders and chemists begins rapeseed research and breeding programs based in Saskatoon.

First Rapeseed Breeding Program

From the beginning, research relied on cooperation among a determined group of breeders and chemists and the organizations they worked for.

In the 1940s, Canada’s first rapeseed breeding program was started by Dr. William J. White, a plant breeder at Dominion Forage Laboratory in Saskatoon. The chemistry of the plant was investigated by Dr. Henry (Hank) Sallans, head of the National Science Council Oilseeds Laboratory.

Later, they would be assisted by other dedicated NRC researchers, like Dr. Burton Craig, Dr. Clare Youngs, Dr. Les Wetter and Dr. J. Milton Bell.

Together, they made many discoveries about rapeseed agronomics, oil analysis, yield, maturity, fatty acid composition and more. Their work would lead to the registration of Canada’s first rapeseed variety, Golden, in 1954, and would provide the foundation for other scientists to develop the crop we now call canola.

February 21

Polish immigrants grow rapeseed in Canada for the first time

After emigrating from Poland, the Solvoniuk family starts growing B. rapa rapeseed in the garden of their Shellbrook, Saskatchewan home. Because the seed has been brought from their homeland, B. rapa comes to be known as Polish rapeseed.

Fred & Olga Solvoniuk

In the late 1920s, Fred and Olga Solvoniuk emigrated from Poland to Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. They had with them a memento from their homeland – a small amount of rapeseed from the Brassica rapa species.

Some say the seed was carried over from Poland in a handkerchief…or perhaps in the seams of Fred’s clothes. Others say it was given to them by another Polish immigrant after the Solvoniuks arrived.

Whatever the source, the seed intrigued the farm family’s new neighbours. The Solvoniuks started planting it in their garden – at first growing just enough for their own use. Soon they were sharing tobacco cans of seed with other farmers in the area.

Because the seed originated in Poland, the plant came to be known as Polish rapeseed – a name still used for B. rapa varieties today.

SEEDS OF OPPORTUNITY

An ancient oilseed travels to
Canada in a handkerchief and flourishes.

The ancestor of canola was rapeseed, an oilseed grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe. Emigrants to Canada began growing rapeseed on a small scale in the 1930s. Its popularity grew during World War II as Canada rushed to meet the urgent demand for industrial lubricants.

IN PURSUIT OF A HEALTHIER OILSEED

Canada looks for a new food crop
with a more desirable composition.

After WWII, Canada had two pressing needs – a wider range of crops for farmers to grow and a bigger supply of edible oil. Scientists thought rapeseed could be the answer, if they could breed out erucic acid and glucosinolates. An era of intense innovation began, led by Dr. Keith Downey and Dr. Baldur Stefansson, Canada’s two legendary “Fathers of Canola.”

THE ROAD TO “DOUBLE LOW”

Better oil + better meal = the crop we know as canola.

By 1970, erucic acid content had dramatically improved and demand was growing. However, use was still limited by glucosinolate levels in the meal. By the end of the decade, breeders had overcome this challenge. The first low erucic/low glucosinolate varieties were commercialized, and canola was officially here.

THE WORLD DISCOVERS CANOLA

Research and marketing increase the
value of Canada’s new oilseed.

By the 1980s, science was advancing not just the quality of canola, but also the world’s acceptance. Now research focused on a new goal – revealing canola’s many advantages for human health, food preparation, shelf stability and animal diets – the strong foundation for a new global brand.

INNOVATION TAKES ROOT

Advances in breeding technology create an exciting era of progress.

As a new millennium neared, genetic innovation created a surge in new varieties that were higher-yielding, easier to grow and packed with end-user benefits. Production boomed with the growth of global demand and new uses for canola.

CANOLA TODAY AND BEYOND

A $26.7 billion industry, creating jobs for 250,000+ Canadians

Today canola is the third most important edible oilseed in the world and one of Canada’s most profitable crops. This remarkable transformation is the result of strong partnership throughout the value chain. With continued innovation and risk management, canola’s future will be just as bright.
