Prairie weed surveys

Key Result

This project is still in progress, but it aims to provide information on the abundance and distribution of weed species in major annual crops including wheat, durum, barley, oats, corn, canola, soybean, flax, mustard, peas and lentils.

Project Summary

Intense grassy weed pressure in a canola field

This project will complete the sixth set of weed surveys in the Prairie Provinces since the series of provincial surveys began in the mid-1970s in order to summarize existing weed survey information and conduct a new series of general weed surveys. The survey will provide information on the abundance and distribution of weed species in major annual crops including wheat, durum, barley, oats, corn, canola, soybean, flax, mustard, peas and lentils.

The weed survey data collected through this research can then be compared to previous provincial survey for any potential changes in weed population that have occurred over time. Attention can be brought to any weeds that are increasing in abundance and they can be targeted for further investigation amongst the integrated weed management community for recommended management options going forward. This information can then be extended to producers to improve productivity, profitability and sustainability within their farming systems.
