Biological nitrogen fixation in canola

Key Result

This project is still in progress, but aims to generate canola with the ability to facilitate nitrogen fixation (using atmospheric nitrogen as the source).

Project Summary

Canola has significant nitrogen requirements to produce a high quality crop. The addition of nitrogen fertilizer to satisfy this nutrient requirement is both costly and can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

The objective of this project is to create a canola variety that can fix its own atmospheric nitrogen to supplement the use of nitrogen fertilizer. This trait would allow crops to grow more efficiently in nitrogen-deficient soils.

Canola with this atmospheric nitrogen-fixation ability would be sustainably sourcing nutrients while saving growers on fertilizer costs.
