Press Release Gets to the Heart of Workplace Wellness
CanolaInfo’s World Heart Day press release, picked up by such outlets as Reuters, Yahoo! Politics and Forbes.com, has earned more than 82 million impressions since its Sept. 2 release. The release focused on workplace wellness with tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle during work hours, such as packing a lunch made with canola oil or canola mayonnaise. Check out these tips in honor of World Heart Day on Sept. 27.

Heart and Stroke Foundation Strives to Combat Childhood Obesity
The 2009 Heart and Stroke Report on the Health of Ontario's Kids found that children are at risk of health problems due to lack of physical activity and poor nutrition. With 28 percent of children in Ontario overweight or obese, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is taking measures to combat the problem, including building partnerships with other organizations that promote health like the Canola Council of Canada.

Cook with Heart for the Heart with New Cookbook
"The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil," a new cookbook from the American Diabetes Association and CanolaInfo, is coming to U.S. bookstores in October. It will have 151 recipes along with an introduction and more. A micro web site about the cookbook is now live, featuring recipes, photos, heart-smart cooking tips and ordering information. Pre-orders for the cookbook will begin Sept. 18.

Canola Oil Helps Create Haute, Healthy Hospital Meals
Hospital food can taste good and be good for you … that’s what several chefs sought to prove in this year’s Healthcare Food Management Culinary Competition. The bronze medalist created his pan-seared chipotle flatiron steak and accompanying garnishes with canola oil. Each recipe was to cost under $5 and contain less than 600 calories, 20 grams of fat and 1,000 milligrams of sodium.

Canola Oil Poised to Help Meet Consumer Demand for Omega-3s
American consumers recognize the lack of omega-3 fatty acids in their diet more readily than they acknowledge being deficient in any other nutrient, according to a 2008 study by the Natural Marketing Institute. Another study found that 38 percent of shoppers reported increasing their omega-3 intake, a number that has jumped three-fold in the last 10 years. Monsanto is developing a canola oil containing stearidonic acid, which can be readily converted in the body to EPA, a beneficial omega-3. Martek and Dow AgroSciences plan to use a gene from Martek’s microalgae to produce canola oil rich in DHA, another omega-3 with a range of promising health benefits.
