Canola Proteins Poised to Shake Up Food and Beverage Industry

A major breakthrough in adding healthful protein to beverages, using canola protein isolates, has received Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Burcon Nutrascience obtained GRAS status for Supertein®, which can be added to sodas, sports drinks and even champagne, adding protein content without making a significant difference in taste. Puratein®, another canola protein isolate and Burcon product, also made GRAS status and can be used to replace eggs and milk as ingredients in things like baked goods, mayonnaise and other food products.

"It's good news for canola again," said Robert Hunter of Canola Council of Canada, who noted the two-year anniversary of the qualified health claim for canola oil this week.

Burcon has partnered with ADM to market canola protein to major food and beverage companies. ADM plans to build a facility dedicated to extracting protein isolates from canola.
