What do you call an event where you
see clubroot in the field and get to know more about its galls? A
"Galla" of course.
Canola growers, agronomists and all others interested
in canola are invited to attend a hands-on Canola Galla at the
clubroot nursery at Brooks, Alberta, on Wednesday, July 25.
"The Galla is a follow up to our highly successful
indoor CanoLAB held in St. Albert in March," says Dan Orchard,
agronomy specialist for the Canola Council of Canada. "This time
we're out in the field, seeing clubroot first hand and learning a
wide range of canola diagnostic tips."
The Canola Council of Canada, Alberta Agriculture and
Rural Development, the Alberta Canola Producers Commission, and
Innovotech are event co-hosts.
The Brooks site offers an opportunity to utilize a
clubroot nursery - ensuring attendees can learn to identify
clubroot at all stages. Attendees will also get to see a variety of
susceptible crops and weeds, a mock field call station - focused on
diagnostics, and the clubroot Mobile Sanitation Unit. Other
stations will focus on herbicide injury symptoms, weed and insect
identification, and swathing timing.
"The line-up of instructors is amazing," Orchard
says. "We have Scott Meers, Murray Hartman, Ron Howard, Mike
Harding and Shelley Barkley with Alberta Agriculture and Rural
Development, Hector Carcamo, an insect specialist with Agriculture
and Agri-Food Canada, Ralph Lange with Alberta Innovates, and a
number of Canola Council of Canada agronomy staff."
The site is open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A BBQ
lunch will be available between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Registration is required, but attendees can come and go as they
please.
Due to logistical and biosecurity constraints,
individual vehicles will not be able to enter or park at the site.
All participants will be required to park at the rest stop east of
Bassano (see google map). A shuttle to and from the
field is provided at no cost.
There is no charge for this event but space is
limited. Click here to register: http://canola.ab.ca/canola_galla_2012.aspx
