Docs Want "You" to Use Canola Oil

Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, also known as the "You Docs," give a basic command for lowering cholesterol and improving overall heart health: cook with canola oil. The celebrity doctors tout the importance of reducing saturated fat and replacing it with mono- and polyunsaturated fats in the diet, especially in light of a new study that found switching from saturated to polyunsaturated fat can reduce the risk of heart disease by 19 percent.

McDonald’s Israel Proves Nutrition is King

McDonald’s restaurants in Israel will launch a new hamburger with only 9 percent fat, keeping up with the country’s reputation for having the healthiest McDonald’s in the world – a reputation the McDonald’s Israel owner attributes in part to its being the first of the fast-food giant’s worldwide locations to switch to canola oil in 2003. Israeli consumers have responded so well to the healthy changes that McDonald’s has grabbed the throne from Burger King, which announced it will leave the country.

The Ultimate Cooking Oil

A new cookbook from a registered dietitian, "The Ultimate Omega-3 Diet," advocates cooking and eating foods prepared with canola oil to increase intake of omega-3 fat and limit omega-6 fat. For example, the author’s omega-3-rich brownies use a blend of flour and flax meal as well as canola oil and applesauce to replace the butter.

Go Fish This Summer for Health

The American Institute of Cancer Research uses canola oil for its cumin-crusted salmon recipe, noting that canola oil’s high smoke point allows for proper searing of fish. Get a double dose of omega-3 fats from the fish and canola oil in this recipe.
