Viterra and Bio-Exx ink canola supply deal – Bio-Extraction Inc. has announced a 10-year, 40,000 tonnes per year deal for Viterra to supply canola seed to a new Bio-Exx plant planned for Saskatoon, SK.

Toronto, ON-based Bio-Exx will use an oil extraction process that it says will recover more quality oil from canola seed than traditional solvent extraction or cold pressing. This process involves a new, non-flammable, “eco-friendly” solvent, according to the company. It plans to begin operations in January 2009. Through this deal, Viterra has become the exclusive supplier of canola seed to the new facility.

Restaurant oil use survey to be unveiled – May 17 in Chicago, IL the results of a US restaurant survey will be released at the National Restaurant Association.

Hosted by Technomic, the company that performed the survey, the session is called “Trans-formation of Restaurant Oil Use: Greasing the Health Wheel.” The goal was to gather information on little known usage and perceptions of cooking oils in restaurants.

Canola oil products feature added omega-3 – Crisco has released its new Crisco Puritan Canola Oil with Omega-3 DHA. According to the company, it can be used in everyday cooking and baking without depleting the benefits of omega-3’s.

Shedd’s Spread Country Crock Omega Plus is made with a blend of oils such as canola and soybean and is an excellent source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). It contains 500 mg of omega-3 ALA per serving, 38% of the daily value of omega-3 ALA.

 

In conjunction with the debut of the new spread, Country Crock is launching a campaign called Small Changes at www.yourfamilytable.com, where it invites people to share the small changes they make to improve their health and well-being.

 

New Canadian cookbook highlights canola oil – Canola Camp alum and all-round canola supporter Anita Stewart visited Winnipeg, MB last week for a book signing in support of her new recipe book Anita Stewart’s Canada.

 

The book focuses on using Canadian ingredients, including indigenous foods of the First Nations and a chapter on crops such as canola, flax and soy.
