Proposed Dietary Guidelines Favor Healthy Fat
The
Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s report on the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans 2010 was recently released, calling for a plant-based diet with
healthy fat from sources like nuts and canola oil. The committee recommends
that the guidelines advise no more than 7 percent of total daily calories come
from saturated fat, down from a 10 percent limit in previous years. That’s good
news for canola oil, which has the least saturated fat of all cooking oils.

Canola Oil Up in Bobby Flay’s Grill
Iron
Chef, restaurant owner and Food Network personality Bobby Flay is a frequent
user of canola oil and he’s at it again on Parade.com with a grill menu for
Fourth of July picnics. Flay’s Grilled Salmon with Mustard Barbecue Sauce,
Black Bean & Corn Succotash and Grilled Sweet-Potato Salad with Bacon and
Herb Vinaigrette all call for canola oil to create a nutritious, flavorful and
festive spread.

Marinating Reduces Harmful Compounds in
Grilled Meat
Marinating
meat like chicken breasts for just 15 minutes before throwing it on the grill
can reduce by up to 85 percent heterocyclic amines (HCAs) -- compounds created
from hot flames that may increase the risk of several cancers. "You
Docs" Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen recommend a blend of canola oil,
balsamic vinegar and fresh herbs like basil, rosemary and sage for marinating
meat, which is also helpful in combating HCAs.

Summer Fun with Flavored Oils
The
Chicago Tribune
says canola oil is ideal for infusions, such as flavored oils and vinaigrettes,
because its neutral taste allows it to better display the flavors of other
ingredients. For an example of canola oil-based vinaigrette at its best, try
CanolaInfo’s fresh, summery Fruit
Salad with Mojito Dressing.
