Proposed Dietary Guidelines Favor Healthy Fat

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s report on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 was recently released, calling for a plant-based diet with healthy fat from sources like nuts and canola oil. The committee recommends that the guidelines advise no more than 7 percent of total daily calories come from saturated fat, down from a 10 percent limit in previous years. That’s good news for canola oil, which has the least saturated fat of all cooking oils.

Canola Oil Up in Bobby Flay’s Grill

Iron Chef, restaurant owner and Food Network personality Bobby Flay is a frequent user of canola oil and he’s at it again on Parade.com with a grill menu for Fourth of July picnics. Flay’s Grilled Salmon with Mustard Barbecue Sauce, Black Bean & Corn Succotash and Grilled Sweet-Potato Salad with Bacon and Herb Vinaigrette all call for canola oil to create a nutritious, flavorful and festive spread.

Cargill Launches New Omega-3 Oil to Food Industry

Cargill's Clear Valley® Omega-3 Oil, a new blend of canola and flaxseed oils that contains up to 30 percent alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, will be introduced at the Institute of Food Technologists Food Expo July 18-20. The oil is available for trial and will allow food manufacturers to state "good or excellent source of ALA omega-3" on food labels.

Marinating Reduces Harmful Compounds in Grilled Meat

Marinating meat like chicken breasts for just 15 minutes before throwing it on the grill can reduce by up to 85 percent heterocyclic amines (HCAs) -- compounds created from hot flames that may increase the risk of several cancers. "You Docs" Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen recommend a blend of canola oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh herbs like basil, rosemary and sage for marinating meat, which is also helpful in combating HCAs.

Summer Fun with Flavored Oils

The Chicago Tribune says canola oil is ideal for infusions, such as flavored oils and vinaigrettes, because its neutral taste allows it to better display the flavors of other ingredients.
