Omega-3s Linked to Reduced Risk of Diabetes
Increased levels intake of omega-3 fats from plant or animal sources could help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to three new studies from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Intake of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 found in canola oil, was found to reduce the risk of diabetes by 21 percent in one of the two Chinese population studies with data from over 43,000 men and women.

Proper Nutrition Can Prevent or Even Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

Adjusting nutrition and diet can greatly help manage, prevent or potentially reverse type 2 diabetes. Suggestions include reducing saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium in the diet and replacing carbohydrates with monounsaturated fat. Canola oil, high in monounsaturated fat and low in saturated fat, fits into a diabetes-friendly diet.

A Tonne of Canola

Richardson Oilseed announced that it hit the 1-million-tonne mark for canola production this year from its Lethbridge and Yorkton, Saskatchewan, crushing plants. The company opened its Yorkton plant one year ago, which tripled its oil production capacity. "Ten years ago, we were crushing 360,000 tonnes of canola in one year and now we’ve hit the 1 million-tonne mark," said Pat Van Osch, vice president and general manager, who cited rising global demand for canola oil products as the reason.

India has a rising demand for healthy food products, but some consumers are getting the wrong messages. Dr. Aashish Contractor, head of preventive cardiology at the Asian Heart Institute, said shunning fat altogether is not the answer to a healthy diet – rather one should watch caloric intake and limit saturated and trans fats.
