New Year, New Healthy You
Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions are health-related, and canola oil is a great choice for improving nutrition and overall heart health. Janna Kelley, Oklahoma State University extension educator, says "fat is your friend," as long as it’s low in saturated fat and free of trans fat like canola oil. Start the first few days of your resolution off right with canola granola.

Nutrition Top-of-Mind for Canadians
Canadians have resolved to be more health-minded in the new year, according to a survey published by the Canadian Council of Food and Nutrition. The report shows that half of Canadians think nutrition is a "very important" factor in food choices, and six out of ten said they’ve recently adjusted their diet to include more healthful options. No doubt these Canadians’ dietary revisions will include canola oil, a heart-healthy way to add good fats to any meal.

U.S. Canola Oil Imports on the Rise
As commercial use of soybean oil declines, canola oil is becoming even more popular. The U.S. is anticipated to import 2.55 billion pounds of canola oil in 2008-2009, a 14 percent increase from last year and nearly double the amount imported four to five years ago.

MUFA, Mediterranean Diets Highlight Canola Oil
Canola oil has a starring role in the newly coined "MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acid) diet" and therefore, has broken the glass ceiling into the popular Mediterranean diet, traditionally characterized by olive oil. Both diets focus on unprocessed, natural foods containing minimal saturated fat and zero trans fat, including a healthy oil like canola. Diets like these are recommended by the American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association to help lower total and bad cholesterol levels.

Shape magazine’s monthly shopping list includes canola oil as a shopping cart must-have – a great idea for getting the daily 1½ tablespoons recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s qualified health claim that canola oil may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. The list also gives a tilapia recipe with side dishes, so you can transform your healthy groceries into a tasty meal.
