California Starts New Year with Trans
Fat Ban
Jan. 1, 2010, marks California’s official status as the first
state to ban artificial trans
fat in restaurants. Though the mandate was passed in 2008, restaurants were
given a one-year grace period to get partially hydrogenated oils and other
sources of trans
fat out of their foods. Two eateries in Martinez, Calif., say they’ve always
used canola oil to keep trans
fat at bay. Also this week, legislators in Broome County, N.Y., voted to sweep trans fat out of the
county’s 700 or so restaurants with no known objections from the food service
community.

New Year’s Resolution: Be Good to Your Body
and Heart
Adopting
healthy eating habits in 2010 may help prevent chronic diseases such as heart
disease and diabetes, and good fats like canola oil play an integral role. A
nutrition expert in Australia notes that recent research of people with or at
risk of developing type 2 diabetes may improve their cholesterol, triglycerides
and fasting insulin levels by consuming polyunsaturated fats found in canola
oil, oily fish and walnuts.

From Classic to Cold-Pressed, Canola Oil
Equals Success
Canola oil is Canada’s claim to fame and the introduction of
artisanal cold-pressed canola oil gives it a new culinary twist. An article
from The Reader’s Digest
in Montreal digs into the history of canola oil and discusses its recent
expansion from "stealth oil" – neutral and low in saturated fat,
"the perfect cooking oil for a fat-phobic population" – to gourmet
cold-pressed varieties. Pick up the January 2010 issue of The Reader’s Digest for
the article.
