USA Today included "The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil" in a round-up of the top five diabetes cookbooks in its print (1.9 million+ circulation) and online (13 million+ impressions) issues Dec. 22. A person with diabetes tested the Panko-Parmesan Chicken with Capers recipe and said it "was easy to make and ... good," while the author called the recipes fresh and easy. The cookbook cover was included in the article and on the front page of the life section as a teaser.

California Starts New Year with Trans Fat Ban

Jan. 1, 2010, marks California’s official status as the first state to ban artificial trans fat in restaurants. Though the mandate was passed in 2008, restaurants were given a one-year grace period to get partially hydrogenated oils and other sources of trans fat out of their foods. Two eateries in Martinez, Calif., say they’ve always used canola oil to keep trans fat at bay. Also this week, legislators in Broome County, N.Y., voted to sweep trans fat out of the county’s 700 or so restaurants with no known objections from the food service community.

Adopting healthy eating habits in 2010 may help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, and good fats like canola oil play an integral role. A nutrition expert in Australia notes that recent research of people with or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes may improve their cholesterol, triglycerides and fasting insulin levels by consuming polyunsaturated fats found in canola oil, oily fish and walnuts.

From Classic to Cold-Pressed, Canola Oil Equals Success

Canola oil is Canada’s claim to fame and the introduction of artisanal cold-pressed canola oil gives it a new culinary twist. An article from The Reader’s Digest in Montreal digs into the history of canola oil and discusses its recent expansion from "stealth oil" – neutral and low in saturated fat, "the perfect cooking oil for a fat-phobic population" – to gourmet cold-pressed varieties. Millions "Discover Canola Oil" with CanolaInfo News Release

A Dec. 30 social media release on "The Professional Chef Discovers Canola Oil" e-learning module by The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and CanolaInfo garnered more than 120 million impressions due to pick-up by Yahoo!, Yahoo! Canada and Reuters among many other media outlets. The release highlighted ethnic–inspired recipes, including Tunisian Spiced Chicken Skewers, Brick-Pressed Cuban-Inspired Sandwiches and Spicy Beijing Noodles, in keeping with current food trends. Video demos by CIA chef-instructors make the recipes easy for home chefs.
