Canola Cash Receipts Shatter Records

Canadian farm cash receipts from canola broke records in 2008 with a whopping 42.1 percent increase over the previous year. According to newly released numbers from Statistics Canada, market receipts for Canadian farmers from the sale of crops and livestock totaled $41.8 billion in 2008, of which canola receipts accounted for $4.9 billion. This made canola the Number 1 crop in farm cash receipts in Canada ahead of wheat (excluding durum).

Report Sets Sights on Heart Health

A federally commissioned steering committee recommends that Canada spend $700 million over the next seven years to fight heart disease. In their report issued February 24, 2009, the Canadian Heart Health Strategy and Action Plan proposed a comprehensive approach to reducing cardiovascular deaths. The report says cardiovascular disease is responsible for the death of more Canadians annually than any other illness.

Obama Tastes Canola Oil on Visit to Canada

In his first foreign trip as U.S. president, Barack Obama took his motorcade on a detour to Ottawa’s ByWard Market for a Beavertail. The famous Canadian pastry is made of whole wheat dough in the shape of a beaver tail and cooked in canola oil. Hooker’s Beavertails invented one called the Obamatail, topped with cinnamon, sugar, chocolate, a bit of maple and a whipped cream "O" – which was, of course, what the president ordered.

Mayo Clinic Recommends Canola Oil As a Primary Source of Good Fats

In a web feature on nutrition guidelines, MayoClinic.com says that while saturated and trans fats can increase blood cholesterol levels and risk of coronary artery disease, healthy fats like canola oil are a key factor in the body’s ability to absorb vitamins. Fat Quality in Diet is As Important as Fat Quantity

In a summary of an International Expert Meeting titled "Health Significance of Fat Quality in Diet," 40 nutrition, diet and health professionals from 25 countries determined that the quality of fat in a person’s diet is just as important as the quantity. They agree that swapping saturated and trans fats, like those found in butter and whole milk, for healthy fats like canola oil can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Plant Biosciences Research in Saskatoon Celebrates 60th Anniversary

This month, in conjunction with the Canadian government, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) celebrates 60 years of plant biosciences research in Saskatoon and the 25th anniversary of its Plant Biotechnology Institute. Beginning in the 1950s, the NRC plant biosciences research fostered the development of a new edible oil. You guessed it: canola. Today, thanks to technological advances made possible by the help of the NRC, the canola industry accounts for more than $11 billion per year of the Canadian economy.

Canola Oil a Winning Ingredient on Top Chef

The semi-final episode of Bravo’s Top Chef Season 5 took the chefs to New Orleans, where contestant Carla used canola oil for her shrimp and andouille beignets. Canola oil’s neutral flavor makes it a great choice with any flavor profile, even the distinctive taste of New Orleans cuisine. Carla's creation earned praise from the judges, an elimination challenge win and a spot in the finale. Spoiler alert: though Carla did not take home the title of Top Chef, canola oil helped her create a first-place dish.

CanolaInfo Launches Nutrition Month Ad Campaign

CanolaInfo has embarked on an aggressive advertising campaign for Nutrition Month in March.  Today’s Dietitian, Today’s Diet and Nutrition, Diabetes Educator, Baking and Snack, QSR and Food Technology will all feature the CanolaInfo ads in their upcoming issues. In each publication, a full page ad will be run in conjunction with a special tear-out dietary fat chart for readers to keep and reference when making decisions about which cooking oil to use.
