Give Your Heart the Gift of Health with Canola Oil
For Heart Month and Valentine’s Day, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recommends "falling in love with healthy fats," including canola oil, to lower bad cholesterol. Also, before making reservations for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner, check to make sure the restaurant uses a cooking oil, such as canola, that’s free of trans fat.

Top 10 Press Release Scores 10 on Pickup
CanolaInfo’s Feb. 4 press release, "Top 10 Ingredients for Recession-Proof, Healthy Cooking," was covered by national news media outlets and several popular websites, quickly spreading the good word about canola oil and other heart-healthy ingredients. AOL Money & Finance, which gets more than 15 million visitors per day, was one of 180 stories resulting from the news release, which created at least 25 million impressions.

Canola Oil and … Alcoholic Beverages?
Yes, you heard correctly. It seems that See Magazine uses a hefty dose of canola oil in its recipe for "booze caviar," a feat of molecular mixology involving almost-frozen canola oil, a plastic squeeze bottle and gelatin to create a cocktail resembling caviar. If you’re intrigued, catch more food science fun at the Canola Council’s annual meeting banquet on March 11, featuring food innovator Homaro Cantu.

Trans Fat Gets the Boot in Canada
Canadian foods are increasingly trans fat-free, according to Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq. When its Trans Fat Task Force set limits for the artery-clogger in pre-packaged foods in 2006, Health Canada gave producers a two-year deadline for meeting the regulations. The third set of data from the trans fat monitoring program, released yesterday, showed that 80 percent of pre-packaged foods tested at or below the trans-free limit.

Canola Oil Helps Give Comfort Food a Makeover
EatingWell magazine’s upcoming cookbook, Comfort Foods Made Healthy: The Classic Makeover Cookbook, uses canola oil and other healthy substitutes to turn classic dishes like mac and cheese into more nutritious fare. For example, the cheddar and beer soup, a hearty version of a cold weather staple, uses canola oil and non-fat milk to cut bad fat.

The Big Cheese of Oils
Beehive Cheese Co.’s prize-winning concoction Barely Buzzed, a coffee-rubbed cheddar cheese, uses canola oil as one of its primary ingredients. Three years ago, Beehive’s founders decided to combat boredom by mixing coffee, dried lavender and canola oil and patting it around the perimeter of three cheddar wheels. The result? First prize at the American Cheese Society competition and the rest is history.
