Canola Oil Worth its Weight in Gold at Olympics

Canola oil got a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver from Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, who promoted Canadian foods there this week. He noted the country’s "heart-smart grains and oils," such canola oil, at a media breakfast highlighting "the safe, delicious and high-quality foods that Canadian farmers produce."

U.S. First Lady Launches Campaign Against Childhood Obesity

"Let's Move," a national initiative headed by Michelle Obama to combat rising childhood obesity in the U.S., is now signed into action and backed by as much as $1 billion a year for 10 years. It includes programs to promote easier access to healthy foods and will push for the reinstatement of the Child Nutrition Act to reduce the sodium and fat content in school lunches and offer more whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Twin Italian chefs from Miami’s Quattro restaurant appeared on "The Martha Stewart Show" and recommended canola oil for deep-frying. When Martha asked why not olive oil, the chefs noted that canola oil has a much higher smoke point and neutral flavor, making it ideal for frying. Try the recipe for their eggplant parmigiana after watching the clip.

Vitamin E May Improve Cognitive Function in Elderly

A study from the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo found that a diet rich in vitamin E may help elderly people fend off cognitive impairment such as memory loss. Canola oil is on the list of recommended foods as a good source of vitamin E.

Canola Oil "Roars" Health in Chinese New Year

In honor of the 2010 Chinese New Year, the year of the tiger, the American Institute for Cancer Research gives a nod to stir-frying and suggests using canola oil because it’s "ideal for stir-frying in a healthy way." The institute noted canola oil’s beneficial monounsaturated fatty acids, high smoke point and neutral flavor and provided a recipe for Lemon Stir-fry Chicken with Chinese Noodles.
