 New Cookbook Conquers the World

 "The Heart-Smart Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola Oil" from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and CanolaInfo is cooking in the media … a story on it was one of the top-viewed on the Tulsa World’s web site (300,000+ viewers) this week and appeared in the Dec. 3 newspaper (100,000+ circulation). Featuring the recipe and photo for Pork Tenderloin, Potatoes, and Horseradish-Mustard Seed Sauce as well as the book cover, ordering information and links to the CanolaInfo and ADA web sites, the article addresses management and prevention of diabetes through diet.

Kiss the Cook(ie)

EatingWell magazine’s annual cookie contest is all about swapping ingredients for a healthier end product and canola oil is an integral substitution. Food Editor Jessie Price recommends replacing half the butter, margarine or shortening in your recipes with heart-smart canola oil. Try two of this year’s cookie champions, Double Peanut Butter-Chocolate Chewies and Almond Cherry Bites, to get a dose of healthy fat from canola oil while satisfying your sweet tooth.

Getting to the Heart of Good and Bad Fats

A registered dietician cites the American Heart Association’s recommendation to use margarine made with liquid vegetable oil, adding that consumers should choose one with canola oil instead of palm oil for a better fat profile. She notes a favorite trick for reducing saturated fat: replace half the butter in a recipe with canola oil.

Canola Industry Works to Maintain Supply Worldwide


Statistics Canada reported that for the third consecutive year, record canola was harvested in Manitoba. Due to better yields and more acres, harvested canola increased 9.8 percent from last year. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Stephen Harper addressed China’s restrictions on Canadian canola imports. "We welcome China's decision to lift restrictions on Canadian pork, but ill-considered protectionist measures -- like restrictions on canola imports -- can only lead to increased pressures for retaliation and protectionism," he said. China imports canola primarily for healthy cooking oil.

Celeb "Fry Guys" Recommend Canola Oil for Chicken

Simple, back-to-basics dishes are a 2010 foodie trend, according to a new survey by the National Restaurant Association and American Culinary Federation. Enter gourmet fried chicken on fancy menus. Both Thomas Keller of Ad Hoc restaurant in Yountville, Calif., and Nick Hodge of Kitchenette in Montreal, Q.C., recommend frying in canola oil for great results.
