StatsCan predicts record canola production

Statistics Canada reported August 22 that Canadian farmers expect to produce 10.4 million tonnes of canola this year, up 8.9% over last year’s record production of 9.5 million tonnes.

This high number is derived from a combination of anticipated average yield of 29.3 bushels per acre and harvest area of 15.6 million acres. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba account for 98% of Canadian canola production.

New research to uncover lesser known benefits of canola oil

The Canola Council of Canada has announced an exciting new research project taking place at the University of Manitoba. Researchers led by Dr. Usha Thiyam are working to uncover some of the lesser known functional benefits of canola oil, thanks to a Collaborative Research and Development Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canola Council and Syngenta Crop Protection (Canada) Inc.

Thiyam and her team will investigate the nutraceutical and functional properties of antioxidants such as sinapic acid and tocopherols in canola seed, oil and meal. By applying novel extraction techniques, they hope to optimize the extracts for use in a number of value-added applications such as oils with greater stability and enhanced nutrition.

NSERC’s contribution of $480,000 over three years is being matched by Syngenta and the Canola Council, for a total of almost $1 million.

Canadian crush capacity at record levels and growing

According to the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA) Canada’s major oilseed processors crushed a record 3.999 million tonnes of canola in 2007/08, and capacity is set to increase this year.

Major construction projects will not come on line until 2009/10, says Bob Broeska, COPA president.

Canbra Foods participates in waste oil collection

Used cooking oil is the latest household item to be included on the list of recyclables, partially thanks to Canbra Foods, a canola crusher based in Lethbridge, AB.

ERM BioSource is partnering with the Recycling Council of BC to propose a pilot program that would enable White Rock, BC residents to toss out used cooking oil at select restaurants. ERM’s parent company, Next Energy Systems would turn the oil into biodiesel. Canbra has also committed to partner in the pilot.

US farmers eye canola production in non-traditional areas

Farmers in Charlotte County, North Carolina are meeting to discuss the potential of canola production in their area. Red Birch Energy, based in Martinsville, VA will also participate in the meeting to encourage farmer to try canola production.
