Canola biodiesel is:
- Good for the environment – Biodiesel production and use reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 85% compared to petroleum diesel. That means the trucks and heavy machinery that fuel the Canadian economy can burn cleaner fuel – today.
- Made in Canada – A made-in-Canada biodiesel industry will keep fuel production, resources and jobs in our country.
- Good for the Canadian economy and farmers – The biodiesel industry will further diversify the Canadian farm economy and create opportunity for industry investment.
What is canola biodiesel?
- Biodiesel is a renewable fuel produced using canola oil, which comes from canola seed.
- Canola oil is made into biodiesel through a refinery process called transesterification. This is a reaction of the oil with an alcohol to remove glycerin, which is a byproduct of biodiesel production.
- Pure canola biodiesel can be blended in any proportion with petroleum diesel. The most common blends are 2% (B2), 5% (B5) and 20% (B20).
Why canola biodiesel?
- Canola’s unique characteristics make it an ideal feedstock for biodiesel.
- Canola’s high oil content means more oil is available per unit of seed.
- Canola is low in saturated fat, which is linked to improved cold weather performance for biodiesel.
- Canola biodiesel is a proven fuel already in widespread use in Europe.
