Canola Protein Isolate on Commercial Track

BioExx Specialty Proteins Ltd. announced the successful production of Isolexx™, the first ever, commercial-scale canola protein isolate, at its Saskatoon plant. Tests at the BioExx facility and an independent lab showed the isolate, designed for use in nutrition bars as a competitor to soy and whey proteins, had around 95 percent purity. It was produced from 1.3 metric tons of canola meal.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Gaining Notoriety

A report from a London-based market research firm indicated increasing consumer awareness and demand for omega-3 fatty acids in Europe, the U.S. and Canada. A host of new products have been introduced in this category, including Cargill’s blend of canola and flaxseed oils, Clear Valley® Omega-3 oil, which contains up to 30 percent alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and allows food manufacturers to label products with the nutrient content claim "good source of ALA omega-3."

Lloydminster Canola Crushing Facility Expands

Archer Daniels Midland will expand its Lloydminster, Sask., canola crushing plant to decrease farmers’ wait time when they deliver canola seed. The company plans to add another unloading bay and double its grading capacity to accommodate producers’ need for more efficient delivery. A significant amount of canola oil from the Lloydminster plant is exported to Asia for food use.

Canola Oil Won’t Break the Heart or Bank

Shopping for whole, healthy foods on a budget may seem like a time-consuming task, but it’s easier with canola oil.
