Pump it Up for Heart Health
The
Canola Council of Canada has formed a partnership with the World Heart
Federation (WHF) from March 2010 to March 2011 to promote heart-smart eating
and World Heart Day (Sept. 26). The partnership will produce six heart-healthy
recipes representing the U.S., Canada, Mexico, India, China and Japan; create a
heart-smart eating brochure with the six recipes; and develop World Heart Day
media campaign materials focused on global heart disease and heart-smart
eating, including social media outreach. All materials will utilize the WHF
logo and include multi-country distribution.

Physician Calls Canola Oil a Cut Above the
Rest
Dr.
Dean Ornish, founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, promoted
canola oil over olive oil at the Canola Council of Canada’s recent convention.
He said canola oil is "substantially healthier," with the least
saturated fat of all common cooking oils. Western
Producer reporter Ed White, a conference attendee, noted that
canola oil received a "major health endorsement" when CanolaInfo and
the American Diabetes Association produced the cookbook, "The Heart-Smart
Diabetes Kitchen: Fresh, Fast, and Flavorful Recipes Made with Canola
Oil."

Know Your Oils, Namely Canola
Choosing
the right cooking oil helps culinary success and for frying or baking that oil
is canola, not olive, noted the Chicago
Tribune. It compared canola oil to regular and extra-virgin
olive oil, touting the former for its high smoke point and neutral flavor.
Canola oil’s low saturated fat content is an added bonus.

Australian Health Organization Says
"No" to Saturated Fat
The
Heart Foundation, one of Australia’s leading health groups, hopes to curb
rising saturated fat intake by requiring palm oil to be labeled explicitly on
packaged foods. The group says palm oil is often disguised as simply
"vegetable oil" on nutrition labels. Palm oil has more than five
times the saturated fat of canola oil.

Canola Oil Wins Health Endorsement by Large
"Margarine"
The
Cancer Association of South Africa recognized two canola oil-based margarines
with its "smart choice" endorsement. In a test of 40 margarines
available in South Africa, the two with canola oil came out on top for having
zero trans fat
and the best ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fat.

Vinaigrette Victory with Canola Oil
When
it comes to making vinaigrette, the oil options are endless, but you may only
need one, according to Salon.com. Canola oil’s neutral flavor helps magnify the
taste of other ingredients, rather than masking them with a flavor of its own,
such as olive oil.
